Bewerbung Werkstatt Berlin-188.jpg

Marco Baumgartner (b. 1977, Switzerland) works as an artist with the medium of photography.

His work is rooted in the everyday: in quiet gestures, fragmented bodies, transitional spaces and situations that may appear inconspicuous at first glance, yet carry an emotional tension.

Baumgartner’s path into artistic practice did not emerge from a classical art trajectory. He comes from various professional contexts and worked for a long time outside the art field. These experiences shape his gaze as much as his need for attentiveness, condensation and inner clarity.

Alongside his artistic practice, he works as a caregiver in the field of migration. This activity sharpens his sensitivity to questions of proximity, responsibility and human dignity, without becoming a direct subject of the photographic work.

In parts of his work, he becomes the subject himself. He understands photography as a mirror. As a means of making inner states, shifts and ruptures visible without fixing them or narrating them autobiographically.

Besides his personal work, he also document events and portraits for people and organizations who value real moments over staged photography.

He does not believe in perfect stories.

Only in real ones.
